Dedicating the Memory Garden on Dewees island

We are lucky enough to have a home on Dewees island, South Carolina. It is eco-friendly, boat-access, no cars, shops (or golf), 3 miles of unspoiled beach, 150 building sites, 70 houses so far. It is a remarkable self-managing and self-supporting community. Since the modern development of the island started in 1991 there have been some discussions about building a place for quiet reflection. This was revisited in 2011 by the Archives committee, and Stephen Anderson, architect son of Islander Jim Anderson, submitted plans to the Board for a simple but stylish pavilion to be built on Dewees Island Drive, on the edge of the water, overlooking the sunset. This was approved and donations of more than $20,000 were received from Deweesians. More than 40 participated in the building under the dedicated and tireless direction of Jim Anderson. It all came to a head yesterday with the dedication by Island President Dave McIntyre in the presence of at least 60 people. Nine bronze plaques were unveiled in memory of past family members. Finally, we buried a time capsule full of memorabilia, books, local magazines, island data and photos, and letters to descendants. The capsule is to be opened in 50 years. Much champagne was consumed to celebrate the event and the extraordinary community.
